Dichotomy of a Liberal and a Maulvi

Dichotomy of a Liberal and a Maulvi

Perception and reality

People seek reality in black and white, and they opt for whatever suits their personal biases, prejudices, convenience, personal instinct and ego. They are often influenced by the prevalent social ideologies, what their parents inculcated to them in childhood and what they learnt in school. Majority feel content with their belief system instilled in them by afore mentioned factors. Desire to jump to the conclusion without giving substantial thought process, not wanting to do earnest research in pursuit of reality and acknowledging the grey shades lead them to path where they believe in whatever suits their personal leanings. They vehemently disregard the view point that contradicts their own. They refuse to think out of the box and resort to cliché and stereotypes that are offered by the belief system that they adhere to. They feel content with their own ideologies and despise the opposite view points. They believe in what they want to believe and disregard any theory which undermines or challenges their own concepts about life. Their half-truth becomes all-encompassing complete truth for them and any opposing theory is a complete lie to them.

Man by nature is curious to know the reality of life but he is also prone to take easy path in life, here lies his problem. He wants to seek truth without getting out of his comfort zone. He wants to stick to the ideologies that cater to his self-desires, and ego.

Liberals and Conservatives

I will talk briefly about two seemingly opposing philosophies i.e. conservative school of thought and liberalism.

Orthodox conservatives feel pride in exercising rituals while not worrying too much about other aspects of life. They want to feel content with their ritualistic approach towards religion so they don’t have to compromise on doing whatever they want to do in their life.

This non pragmatic approach of conservatives give liberals a breathing space, liberals get warm fuzzy seeing conservatives fail.  It gives them justification to prove their view point that one can be a good human without following any divine doctrine. The hypocrisy of conservatives is the soul of their ideology.

Liberals don’t want to compromise on their life style. They want to live a life free from any restrictions from a divine message. They defy the basic challenge posed by divine religion that without entirely surrendering to God and without abying by his instructions one can’t bring any positive change in society and can’t serve humanity. Liberals challenge it and want to modify religious teachings which suite their own comfort zone. They seek failings of religious minded people in their defense.

So while conservatives also shy away from sacrificing in life, liberals do the same.

Challenge of divine religion:

Religion proclaims that without following the tedious and self – sacrificing path, you will be a lost soul weather you call yourself a liberal or conservative. The righteous path deciphers mysteries of life and you develop an understanding about the purpose of life. The only way to seek truth is by abiding by decree of God. Every step  in this endeavor will unfold the mysteries of life. The only way to develop a sensitive heart towards mankind is by surrendering yourself to God and striving to live a pious life. This is a challenge posed by religion and while liberals completely deny it, conservatives only follow the teachings partially whichever are not burdensome to their Nafs.

Righteous few

Messengers of God have repeatedly conveyed to humanity that only those of us are on the right path who surrender their desires to God and abide by his will. Those who spend on underprivileged and themselves live a simple frugal life. They refrain from living a lavish life and abstain from harboring lust and sleaze. Righteous are only those few who are ascetic, God fearing and abide by God’s instructions in every sphere of life. Patience, Reverence of God and worship are their virtues of life. They refrain from being prodigal in any aspect of life no matter how trivial it may sound. Some salient features of a righteous person are that he prefers company of other pious, God fearing people; he lives in a constant reminder of death and life here after. He is thankful to God for his blessings and fearful of his infinite powers. He is mindful of the day of resurrection and lives a disciplined ascetic life; his state of mind is such that he can’t inflict any harm to any creature of God. His heart is full of compassion, love and warmth for fellow humans.

Conclusion

Religion demands a much disciplined life style and to give up free will, which majority is not willing to follow so people adapt whatever suites them and spend their lives justifying ideologies which cater to their lifestyle.

It might sound paradoxical but truth of the matter is that both Maulvi and liberal are different sides of the same coin. They have nurtured ideologies which cater to their comfort zone. Both liberals and conservatives nurture illusions which serve their own Nafs and ego

Both avoid strenuous efforts needed to become a human being envisioned by religion.

Good thought process, slightly different Imran Malik, which I know from Univeristy Time. Quick point on your conclusion though, as u mentioned the ” deciplined approach” and ” ” Give up Free will”, I believe free will us a relative term and varies in various theological back grounds. For Us as a Muslims, the central idea of Islam is to free the human will from every man made laws and rules and free the human soul to connect directly with the supreme power and its beloved. This is unique aspect of Islam and Omar (r.a) did mention the very concept by saying , that how come you can enslave a human soul which is birn free”. Our issue is that we judge people as how they appear. The character of a person is jugded as how ritual specific is him or her. The goal of Islam is to change the heart and this is what best if tge creation (saw) did and the impact was si huge that we still fee that around us , among us and in us.

Great effort by the way, keep writing and exploring and,we will learn from each others inspirations and experiences.
